ANTI-LITTER CAMPAIGN
Heathcote Not Participating
The Heathcote County Council last night decided not to be represented at a local authorities anti-litter campaign meeting, on the ground that it had plans of its own. The meeting has been convened by the Paparua County Council for 11 a.m. on May 26. It is to consider the details of the campaign with the Canterbury Public Relations Officer (Mr E. G. Beckett i and to approach the Christchurch Junior Chamber for its support. "A prosecution occasionally seems sufficient to deter most [>eople from dumping rubbish.” Cr. C. D. Le Comte said. “These meetings take a couple of hours and achieve very little. Our officers have enough to do without losing this amount of time.” Mr J. S. Scott said that a letter had been received from a resident suggesting that a clean-up day should be held in the county. This would be favourably considered at the next meeting of the works committee. The chairman (Mr R. A. Young' suggested that the Paparua council be thanked for its invitation, but told that the council would not be represented at the meeting because it had plans of its own. This was carried. Other Decisions The council decided to transfer its banking accounts from the Bank of New Zealand to the National Bank of New Zealand, after an advice from the former bank that it intended to cancel the council's current overdraft limit. A grant of £5O was approved for the Cashmere Junior Library, and an expenditure of £4B 4s 8d to October 31. 1960, was refunded. A grant of £lO 10s was approved to the St. John Ambulance Association. The Beckenham Boy Scouts committee advised that it had accepted the council's offer of the reserve in Centaurus road at the foot of Whaka crescent as a site for a Scout den. The Christchurch Central Mission was given permission to hold a street appeal on June 2, 1961. The council decided to support the efforts of the “Jets for the South Island’’ movement in its endeavour to protect Harewood airport. Building Permits During the month, 15 building permits had been issued for work to the value of £26,002. the county engineer 'Mr I. L. Hall) reported. The permits comprised five for new dwelling units, five for dw’elLng additions, one industrial building and four garages and sheds.
