MR F. CAMPBELL

Mr Fergus John (“Jack”) Campbell, greenkeeper of the United Bowling Club for 33 years, died last week. Mr Campbell was born in Adelaide in 1885 and came to New Zealand at an early age. He served an apprenticeship in horticulture and began a life-long service at Hagley Park, first in charge of the golf links and soon afterwards as greenkeeper for the United Bowling, Tennis and Croquet Club. He was in charge of about six acres, and his wide knowledge of plant life and his love of hard work produced the very fine playing grounds used for New Zealand championships in three sports. In addition to these duties he catered for all sections for some time, assisted by Mrs Campbell. On Mr Campbell’s retirement, the club presented his wife with an appropriate gift and Mr Campbell received a cheque and was made a life member of the club. He often played bowls. Mr Campbell is survived by his wife and a son.
