ART GALLERY PURCHASES

Three Paintings For Collection

Three pictures were bought for the Robert McDougall Art Gallery by the City Council last evening on the recommendation of

the gallery’s director (Mr W. S. Baverstock).

The paintings were:— “Lotus.” an oil painting by Rata Lovell-Smith, at 30gns: “Snow at Sglington Valley,” by F. G. Shewell. at 18gns; "Passing Showers. Paparanga, Auckland.” by Margot Mountain, of Auckland, at 15gns. The last two paintings are water colours selected from the autumn exhibition of the Canterbury Society of Arts.

The council also accepted three g.ft* from Mr F. A. Shurrock, “Death and the Woodcutter,” a wood engrav. ing by Leo Bensemann. “Winter in Hagley Park” an etching by Alfred H. Cook, and “Black Country, Lake Seife Area,” an oil painting by Rata Lovell-Smith.
