DRIFT INTO BOROUGHS
Census Results Show Trend
Geraldine borough, like other larger boroughs for which early results of the 1961 census are available, has shown a marked increase in population since the 1956 census, according to figures supplied in the third provisional list of results by the Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker). The results show the indications of a population drift to the urban areas, Mr Baker says. The counties and some of the smaller towns are continuing to lose population as a result of the movement from country areas to the larger towns and industrial centres. No results have yet been received from any large city or borough. The Chatham Islands have lost 37 since the 1956 census.
The figures available in the latest list, with the figures for the 1956 census and the percentages of gain
of loss in population are:— Chathams .. 487 524 — 7.06 Mataura 2085 1850 + 12.7 Ross 503 549 — 8.38 Kumara 435 505 —13.86 Lumsden 691 592 4 16.72 Wyndham .. 631 636 + 7.08 Edendale 605 561 + 7.84 Manaia 814 718 + 13.37 Egmont 6239 6347 - 1.7 Patutahi 244 254 — 3.94 Waverley 890 859 + 3.61 Hunterville 596 581 + 2.58 Otautau 806 796 4- 1.26 Nightcaps .. 686 650 + 5.54 Queenstown 1322 1198 + 10.4 Paeroa 2896 2871 + .87 Wairarapa South 3041 3090 - 1.59 Geraldine 1332 1640 + 11.18 Kaitaia 2703 2358 + 14.63
