Capping Book Satire
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. May 3. A satire of American advertising in this year’s Auckland students’ capping magazine was censored at the request of the Bishop of Auckland (the Rt. Rev. E. A. Gowing) on Monday night. The article was in the form of a bogus advertisement entitled ‘‘Great Moments in the History of Wine Drinking.” Directly below the title was a reproduction of “The Last Supper,” by Leonardo Da Vinci, reputedly the “first in a series of magnificent paintings by famous artists commissioned by the Wine Sellers’ Corporation of America." Dozens of students worked late on Monday night painting out the offending picture in more than 9000 capping books. It was too late, however, to recall 11,000 copies which had already been sold before the bishop’s complaint was received.
