May 1. i Denmark leads New Zeaj land in the total daily intake of calories a head of population, but the Dominion's percentage of calories of animal origin in the total intake is higher. The Danish figure is given as 3500 calories daily a person and New Zealand’s. 3440 I in the latest figures available lin the 1960 New Zealand I Year Book. It lists 13 countries.
New Zealand’s percentage of calories of animal origin was given as 51. The Danish percentage, 40. was not the next highest. Canada’s rate. 44, followed New Zealand’s. New Zealanders ate 16 pounds of mutton more in 1958-59 a person than was the annual rate 20 years earlier, according to the Year Book.
Lamb consumption was practically doubled. and pork more than doubled. But the average annual consumption of beef fell by 20 pounds and veal by just on two pounds for the 1958-59 period as against that of 20 years previously. Butter and cheese consumption rose.
Amounts of fish and poultry eaten remained the same.
