LAST CAISSON CLOSES THE VEERGAT.—The last of seven big caissons is moved into position at the Veergat, the sea entrance to the sound between the Zeeland islands of Walcheren and North Beveland, to seal it off from the North Sea. The closing of the channel between the two islands is part of the huge 25year Delta Plan undertaken by the Netherlands. The plan, which arose from the 1953 flood disaster in which 1800 persons lost their lives, streamlines the Dutch coast from a point west of Rotterdam in the north to the island of Walcheren in the south. The plan will be completed by 1978.
