Boxing MAHONI BEATS STEWART
Gruelling Contest In Wellington (N Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 1. The New Zealand heavyweight boxing champion, George Mahoni, gained a points decision over the Australian light-heavy-weight champion, Clive. Stewart, in a gruelling 15-round contest in Wellington, tonight. Mahoni is believed to have broken his right hand when he hit Stewart on the top of the head in the first round. It was swollen and throbbing after the fight, and will be X-rayed.
The bi 4 crowd was in a constant uproar as the chunky, muscled Mahoni and the superbly - conditioned Stewart staged rally after rally in what will go down as one of the most remarkable fights ever seen in Wellington. Hard Slogging
Mahoni scored well in the early rounds, with punches to Stewart’s head, when the Australian was slow in settling down. However, he fought back courageously and made up a lot of leeway after the first five rounds Hard slogging in. the eleventh round saw a dazed Stewart accompany Mahoni back to his corner. Both boxers tired over the last few rounds, but rallied amazingly to keep the fight action-packed until the bell.
