ARTHUR’S PASS SCHOOL
Park Board’s View Any school to be built at Arthur’s Pass should be in keeping with the surroundings, members of the Arthur’s Pass National Park Board said at a meeting yesterday. The Education Department is seeking a site of half an acre at the southern end of the railway houses at Arthur’s Pass opposite the railway station. The senior ranger (Mr P. Croft) said he understood that the Education Board was thinking of a prefabricated building. “We should confer with the architect and see if we can get something better than that,” said Mr L. W. McCaskill. “Here is a chance to get an alpine school in an alpine setting. “I think that they are thinking of something as cheap as possible," raid Mr Croft. “We will try them as far as they will go,” said Mr McCaskill. The secretary (Mr D. Morse) said he had spoken with the Education Board’s architect, who was keen to build a school that fitted in with the surroundings. Final permission to build in the national park must come from the National Parks' Authority, nnd a recommendation that the Education Board's architect confer with the Arthur’s Pass National Park Board is to be sent to the authority.
