War Criminals Still In Cairo

(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, April 12. If Adolf Eichmann could be kidnapped and smuggled 6000 miles to stand trial, there could be no peace of mind nor firm security for hundreds of Nazis who bolted 16 years ago, says a special correspondent of the “Yorkshire Post.”

Only 20 per cent, of war criminals had been captured, he said. Many of these men are known to be in Cairo. The escape pipeline, planned with typical German thoroughness months before Germany collapsed, existed today with headquarters believed to be in Munich and branches throughout the world. The British, Americans, Russians and even the Germans themselves had tried repeatedly to trace and break the network, but without success.

One of the most prominent Nazis now in Cairo was the former S.S. major, Fritz Roessler, a prominent war-time Nazi, who had been listed in every country of the world as a wanted war criminal. In 1952, under the name of Franz Richter, he was elected to the German Bundestag, but when the police found out who he was and swooped on his home, he had fled. He is now political adviser to President Nasser.

Another former Nazi living in luxury in Cairo was Omar Amin, formerly Professor Johannes von Leers, righthand man to Dr. Goebbels in the Ministry of Propaganda. He is now behind the antiJewish propaganda pouring out of the Cairo Institute for the Investigation of Zionism. Von Leers vanished two days before Berlin fell, turned up in Buenos Aires and then went to Cairo.

“The unholy trinity in Cairo is completed by Dr. Hans Eisele, with a lucrative practice in that city. He is the sadist who conducted sterilisation experiments in Buchenwald. He still uses his own name.

“It is open knowledge that Egypt is the major bolthole for the Nazi hierarchy,” the correspondent adds. “Among comparative smaller fry there are General William Farmbacher, Colonel de Bouche of the S.S., Colonel Gerhard Martens, Colonel Zolling and Dr. Wilhelm Voss, war-time director of the Skoda works. The military experts took

over the training of President Nasser’s army. Voss heads the Central Planning Board, concerned with the economic development of Egypt.”
