CRICKET Universities Batsmen Fail Against Otago XI

(New Zealand Press Association)

DUNEDEN, April 4. A brilliant 84 runs were scored by S. N. McGregor (Otago) on the first day of a two-day match between an Otago XI and New Zealand Universities at Dunedin today. McGregor baited for a little more than two hours, and he and B. Sutcliffe scored 124 of Otago's 187 runs, made after Universities had collapsed in its first innings to be all out just after lunch tor 83.

The top scorer for Universities was J. K. CoUinge, with 15.

But for McGregor and Sutcliffe, who scored a casually graceful 40, Otago made a sorry showing against an attack which was lacking in hostility and variation. After the dismissal of McGregor the last five Otago wickets fell for only 12 runs. Four of them were taken by B. Hopkins, a med-ium-pace right arm bowler. In addition to Sutcliffe, he dismissed A. M. Moir and T. Flaws with successive deliveries. He was unfortunate not to get a hat-trick: P. A Sharp skied the first ball he received but a simple catch was dropped. Scores:—
