(New Zealand Press Association)
RIVERTON, April 4. The Wingatui trainer, IL A. Anderton, produced Ravelston to win the main flat event, the Fiord Handicap, and No Offence to win the Autumn Steeplechase on the final day of the Riverton Racing* Club’s meeting today. He took his number of successes for the meeting to nine. Ravelston returned a fine performance to win the Fiord Handicap with a lot in hand under his top weight of 9-7 after being squeezed to the rear of the field with three furlongs to run. The winning double— Ravelston and Begorrah—paid £lB 6s fid for £l. The racing was held in fine weather, but the track was again cutting out. The totalisator handled £48,712, compared with £56.052 last year, a decrease of £7390. The total for the meeting was £172.948 10s. compared with £199.788 last year, a decrease of £26.839 10s. W. F. ElMs was charged with failing to declare a joint interest affecting the nomination of Irish Mist and The Gascon in the Waipango Handicap. He was fined £lO. About four furlongs from home in the Waipango Handicap, Stormai was squeezed tor room and clipped the heels of the horse in front of him and came down. Depend (G. W. Foster), who was immediately behind Stormai, also came down. After hearing a statement from a patrol steward who saw the incident, and from statements from J. R. Dowling and Foster, the Judicial Committee found the incident to be purely accidental. No horse or rider was hurt. Before the running of the Farewell Handicap the apprentice J. H. Jones, who had been placed under the care of T. E. Pankhurst, engaged himself to ride John Jameson without the permission of his master, who had arranged for him to ride Scotch Bid. Under Rule 159, the stewards decreed that Jones ride Scotch Bid and severely reprimanded him. In the run home in the Fairfax Handicap, Cirrus Song_/D. C. Thompson) was
hanging in. Just past the post he suddenly ducked in and Cluny Bill <R. J. Pledger) was knocked down. Alter questioning Thompson and hearing a statement from Pledger, the committee decided that the incident was accidental. Thompson was warned to take greater care in future.
