LAUNCH ON FIRE
Waiheke Island Rescue (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 3. An unidentified launch—possibly a fishing boat—burned and sank a mile and a half off Wanaki. Waiheke Island, this morning. One man, believed to be the only occupant, was rescued by another launch. Late tonight, however, police were still trying to get in touch with the rescued man and his rescuers.
The burning launch was seen from the air by Captain F. Ladd at 8.45 a.m. Smoke rose to at least 200 ft. Captain Ladd saw a man rowing away from the launch in a large dinghy, towing another dingy. A launch from Waiheke was approaching the rower.
