House Exchanges To Be Enlarged

The programme of the P.A.B.X. (private automatic branch exchange) section of the Post Office engineers' branch includes three new large house exchanges in public institutions in Canterbury. Cabling for an enlargement of the local telephone exchange at the Royal New Zealand Air Force station. Wigram, has recently been completed, and the automatic equipment will be installed soon. The new equipment will originally provide 200 extensions. with a large capacity for enlargement. The present system, which is of an older type than that now to be installed, provided for 180 extensions. A new house telephone exchange is also to be installed before next summer at The Hermitage, Mount Cook. This will almost double the number of extensions available, having an initial capacity of 140. A private exchange of larger capacity is also to be installed at the Christchurch Hospital, where work to provide an expandable system with initially 170 extensions will be started about the middle of this month. The present system has 150 lines. The P.A.B.X. section expects that by the end of this year the number of private exchanges in the Christchurch area will exceed 300.
