WAIMAKARIRI REGATTA
The annual Easter regatta on the Waimakartrl river began yesterday, but with the New Zealand Olympic Finn contest being held at Lyttelton with a number ot Canterbury competitors and moat of the active Rciass fleet in Nelson, entries were not as numerous as in previous years. The main race at the day was an open handicap race tor the Echo Trophy. It drew 16 starters and was won by the Pleasant Point catamaran Neptune (R. Frost) off scratch. Stewart’s Gully Idlealonxs filled the second and third placings. Stewart's Gully had a clean sweep In the top placings of another open class handicap. Cherub yachts sailed by Miss Brenda Berry and Don Mclntosh were well up In the event, which attracted 12 entries. Results:— Open Class Handleap—Places (Miss Berry), tmin. 1:4148, 1; Whisper (C. Holland), smln. 1:4547 2; Cupid (Don Mclntosh). Smln. 1:4543, 3. Echo Trophy Handicap— Neptune, scr. 1:9.48. 1: Whisper. 9min, 1:12.52, 2; Gwen-a-Lyn (Doug. Mclntosh). 9min, 1:14.48. 3. There were 11 starters In two P Class races, which resulted as follows: — First Race—Tuna (G. Oborn), Smln. 1:33.0, 1; Bed Shadow (B. Bailey, Timaru). 4mln. 1:32.11, 2; Kembo (G. Morgan). Smln 1:33.8, S. Second Race.—Flee (D. Hobson) scr. 1:15.17, 1: Petite (P. Skelton), scr. 1:18.24. 1; Wimpy (R. Wingfield), Imln, 1:1951. 3. The main events on the programme of the regatta today will be ehampionship races for Idlealong and Cherubs.
