Sportsman s Notebook Encouraging Prospects For Men’s Basketball

Although the number of entries received for this season’s competition is slightly less than last year, prospects are very encouraging, according to the secretary of the Canterbury Men's Basketball Association (Mr A. W. Barrett) . "As soon as the new Christchurch City Council stadium at Cuthbert’s Green in Pages road is completed, it is intended to transfer all competition games to this venue. All representative fixtures will be played at the new stadium." Mr Barrett said. The new stadium would be of great value to the sport in Christchurch as it was of sufficient area to contain two full-sized courts and would have permanent seating for spectator accommodation. “It will fulfil a much needed want in Christchurch, not only for basketball, but for other indoor sports. ” he said. A game against a touring team from South Australia was scheduled for April 17 and, in addition, the Canterbury district tournament a qualifying round for the national champibnships. wmuld be played in Christchurch early in June. The South Island championships were to be held in Christchurch on July 7 and July * * * Army Rugby The Kiwi Rugby team of the New Zealand 2nd Battalion left Singapore on Saturday for Hong Kong where it will play in the final of the Far East land forces championship against a

British Army team. This year, members of the 2nd Battalion. New Zealand Regiment, won both the army Malayan championship and the Singapore Malayan championship thus qualifying for the final. Because of operational Commitments, the team selected this year differs considerably from that which won the Far East land forces championship last season. The team, under the managership of Captaw A. C. Hamilton, of Auckland, will be away for a fortnight during which games against the Hong Kong representative side may also be played.

Successful Bowler

The most successful bowler in the Ellesmere Cricket Subassociation’s competitions this season has been J. T. Chamberlain. He took 39 wickets for 546 runs. Chamberlain was the captain of the Leeston senior side which won the P- V. Bailey Memorial Cup. and he captained the Ellesmere team for the first time last Saturday when it was successful in beating Hurunui. • » «

Ambu-Manikin

Valuable work in mouth-to-mouth and mouth-to-nose resuscitation has been done this season by the Canterbury Surf Life-Saving Association’s chief instructor (Mr A. Lee). Mr Lee has in his possession an ambu-manikin. recently purchased by the association, which has proved a great help in the instruction of the new resuscitation. Already he has given up much of his own time to give demonstrations to various firms, organisations and practically anyone interested. The manikins are valued at about £45. Handicap Bowls A splendid game of bowls was seen in the semi-final of the handicap pairs at the Fendalton Bowling Club’s green between J. Barr and R. Ballinger. Right throughout the game they drew beautifully and were neck and neck for most of the game. Barr ran out the winner in a game as good as any seen on the green this year. The Fairbrother Cup for pairs was won this year at Fendalton by E. Buckeridge and J. Wilson, They defeated J. Clarke and H S. Feast comfortably. Feast. a junior bowler, suffered his first defeat in the final of the competition. Holes In One A. J. McGillivray holed in one at the third. “Toss Up.” at the Russley golf links on Sunday.
