The battle of fares which received considerable publicity some months ago when the Sitmar Line reduced offseason fares to as little as £B9 from New Zealand ports, resulted in the New Zealand Shipping Company also making a considerable reduction. The P. and 0.-Orient Lines say that the readjustments will provide a welcome reduction in tourist-class and one-class fares and are the happy result of the increasing number of Australians and New Zealanders visiting the United Kingdom and Europe. First-class fares have not been reduced. "At the same time." the company says, “because of
the steady rise in operating costs with which passenger ship-owners are continually faced, it has become neceisary to increase the outward one-class and tourist rates from the United Kingdom to Australia by amounts averaging from two per cent, to nine per cent. “It is four years since the company last increased its passenger fares.”
