UNIVERSITY PROTEST

Committee’s Ruling

Some action would have to be taken to restore faith among senior players, the president of the Canterbury University Lawn Tennis Club (Mr D. D. M. Stewart) said in a letter received by the management committee of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association last evening. He was commenting on a protest by his club on a default ruling. The protest had not been allowed. Members said that Mr Stewart was generalising. It was decided to ask him to be more specific in his complaints, especially those referring to members of the association. "It was reported verbally at the last delegates' meeting that a protest from my club regarding the defaulting of a match to be played by our senior men’s team had been turned down by the competitions committee. I cannot let this matter pass without expressing my club’s disapponitment with this ruling,” Mr Stewart said. "It is common knowledge that the competitions committee this season has applied its default rule in some cases and not applied it in others. Senior players are commenting that whenever a member of a Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association committee is late in arriving. no action is taken. "Also, last season inter-club players were permitted to play in the country championsnips as well, but this year, the competitions committee, with no advice to clubs, arbitrarily changed its ruling. The University Club has an unbroken record of service, as far as support of inter-club competition is concerned,” he said. The Irregular application of competition rules by the competitions committee and unannounced changes of attitude towards players taking part in two competitions on the same day had brought about the unfortunate situation. It was to oe hoped that the committee would take some action to restore faith among senior club players. Mr Stewart said.
