Women’s Softball PAST PLAYERS’ GOOD FORM

From form shown In the Canterbury women’s softball Past v. Present match on Sunday it appeared that a number of top players had made a premature retirement from the sport. The Past side scored heavily in the last three innings, and tailed by a narrow margin to take the game. Present won. 14-11.

Before Past’s strong recovery, the Present team had held a tight grip on the game. Its strong batting in the second innings made Past unsteady in the field, and five runs were scored before the side was out. L. Leask opened Past's account by scoring on a fielder’s choice in the third innings. But at that stage the team was trailing by 8-1, and two more runs by Present in the fourth innings seemed to make victory assured.

Past, however, brought three players part the borne plate in reply, and in the next Innings good batting by R Lanlnl. W. Timms and L. Leask gained four more runs. Needing seven runs in its final innings to win, Past made a bold attempt but was dismissed after adding three to its tally. Canterbury B Wins In a game played at Blenheim. the Canterbury Senior B team held off a determined challenge by Marlborough to win 9-8 with an innings in hand. The standard was surprisingly good, considering thst softball in Marlborough is still in its infancy. The home side trailed by a run after the first innings but upset Canterbury In the field with rtrsng batting In its second effort. P. Benni and A. Ruffle batted well, and four runs were scored.

In reply, J. Timms. L. Honeyasan, and P. Dailey hit well for

Canterbury and. sided by some erratic pitching, else scored four runs Two scoreless innings by Marlborough were followed by a home run by A Ruffle By then Canterbury’s score had reached eight through good play by J Gaskell and P. Dailey. Another big hit by Ruffle brought two players home in Marlborough's sixth innings, and Canterbury, after a run by Gaskell, was retired with the bases loaded Two runs behind. Marlborough was forced out for one run in Its last innings for Canterbury to win without batting again.
