Palmerston Nth Problem
(N.Z Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 27. Enrolments for the Palmerston North University College extra-mural courses have exceeded expectations to such an extent that if the Univer-, sity Grants Committee does not provide an additional grant, a limit will have to be imposed. “The enrolment has caused a great deal of embarrassment,” Dr. J. Williams, ViceChancellor of the parent body, Victoria University of Wellington, told the university council today. “Numbers are far in excess of what the present staff can cope with,” he said. Extra money was needed to engage more staff. The numbers of extramural students from all over the country in education. English, history, pure mathematics, and applied mathematics had grown from 565 last year to 1028 this year.
Internal enrolments were about the same—23s Ihst year and 234 this year.
Palmerston North is the only extra-mural institution in New Zealand.
