OSTLER CUP EVENT

Good Sailing By B. Richards

A 12ft catamaran one-un won the Ostler Cup race sailed on the Estuary from Pleasant Point yesterday.

B. Richards took the catamaran Ikarere over the six miles course to finish fourth in the fleet but take the trophy by a minute and a half from the former Canterbury Olympic Finn champion A. Ballintine, in Finrua.

An unusual club course was laid out with windward and leeward. and triangular rounds so that no class in a mixed fleet would be favoured unduly.

Lack of wind was probably, the reason for a mildly blue atmosphere about some of the boats during the race and boats which tried to set spinnakers had difficulties keeping them flying.

On one run. for instance, R. Frost in his 16th catamaran Neptune. hoisted a 200 ft spinnaker which fluttered delicately but inefficiently while Richards—--1 who, of course, was not able to set a spinnaker by himself—held close by along the whole leg. In the light southerly with comparatively flat water, the Finns were the favoured boats and two came home in the lead with 45 seconds between them.

Ballintine headed the fleet and second across the line was P. Haughey’s Solo. Handicap results, showing corrected times were as follows:

Ikarere, 13min, 1:40.0, 1; Finrua, 2min, 1:41.30, 2; Solo, smin, 1:42.45, 3; Neptune, scr, 1:47.30, 4; Ruawaka (W. Nolan and D. Greenwood), scr. 1:49.0, 5; Pudy Tat (Miss A. Rolton and *T. Rolton), lOmin, 1:50.0, 6.

A Clements Cup race sailed in conjunction drew only one entry. It was R. Brewer in the frostply Lista. Brewer went over the course and is claiming the trophy. He finished last of the open fleet.
