QUALIFICATIONS OF STUDENTS

Disturbing Feature At Hamilton

<NZ. Press Association) HAMILTON, March 21,

One disturbing feature of student entry in the first year at the Hamilton Teachers’ College was that 50 per cent, of the male entrants had School Certificate only, said Mr J. S. Allan, the principal of the college, in his first annual report to the South Auckland Education Board today. Every effort should be made to ensure that wellqualified men were attracted to teaching because, without them, the primary school branch particularly might well, in time, find itself short of able male teachers, he said.

The percentage of women with School Certificate only was approximately 33 per cent. It was hoped the qualifications on entry would show a marked improvement next year. The total roll was 171. comprising 164 from the South Auckland Education Board area, two from the Taranaki board area and five from the Nelson board. To Mr M. P. Smith, Mr Allan said the percentage of males with School Certificate only had dropped to about 19 this year. U.K. Soldiers Train With Germans rN.Z Press Assn.—Copyright) BONN. March 20. Bands played, flags were raised, and a jack-booted German lieutenant-colonel read a welcome as 10 British soldiers joined the West German Army in the small Westphalian garrison town of Hemer today. The 10 men—a section of the Green Howards from nearby Iserlohn—are the first British soldiers to spend an extended period as members of a German unit. The drums of the British regiment marched the men into the modern barracks of the 203rd Panzer Grenadiers, a motorised regiment, with which they are to train for 10 days.
