BUTTER AND LAMB

U.K. Market Improves (Special Correspondent N.Z J 3. A. LONDON, March 20. Both New Zealand butter and lamb are- now selling on improved markets. The butter trade evidently believes New Zealand and Australian prices are at rock bottom. There is said to be a "happier feeling” in the market and a firm demand. Whether or not it is the result of representations made by the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake), supplies from various continental countries are now smaller than anticipated. In fact, it is reported there is a shortage of cheaper blending butters from Poland, Finland and Argentina and that their prices are much in line with New Zealand’s—2sos per cwt. Consumption is estimated to be steady around 8500 tons weekly. On Smithfield market the price for New Zealand prime lamb (28-391 b is reported to be steady at Is lOd per lb. The demand is good and there are expectations of this level being maintained for the next six weeks or so.
