Allocation Of

£BO,OOO

The allocation of a record sum of £BO,OOO was announced by the secretary of the New Zealand Leners’ Trust Board (Mr P. J Twomey) yesterday. The distribution. as approved at a recent meeting of the board . includes grants for medical and leorosv work in eight different Pacific territories, extending from the Solomons ! n the west to Tahiti in the east.

An important item in the allocation is £6OOO to be used for equipment for three new dispensaries planned for treating mothers and their babies in the British Solomons and the New Hebrides This follows the allocation last year of £l2 000 to build four dispensaries.

Last year the board made a,special appeal so that di=nensaries might be built with a view to reducing maternal and infant mortality. The sum of £l6 500 is earmarked for the unkeen and running costs of the lenrosy relief vessels bought by the board for the Church of England. Roman Catholic and Methodist missions in the island chains of Melanesia.

Another substantial item is £6500 to build a training centre for nurses at the r»re«brterian Mission in the New Hebrides. In recent vears the work of the boasd has greatly increased.
