RESTRAINTS ON CREDIT

Mr Marshall’s Hint (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Mar. 27. A hint of a change in credit restrictions was given by the Acting-Prime Minister and Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Marshall), when speaking at the annual dinner of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce tonight. Mr Marshall said that with a demand for goods that could not be fully satisfied and the inflationary pressure that that situation generated —“I mention the words motor-car to bring at once to your minds the extreme case”—the Government had a responsibility to encourage increased production and saving. "It also has a responsibility to dampen down that kind of excess demand through credit restraint, as we are trying to do, and of which you will hear more in the next few days.”
