TROTTING Meadow Scott, Zenith Record Sound Trials

Meadow Scott, which will resume racing soon, gave a solid display of pacing to win his heat of the free-for-all at trials held yesterday at Addington by the Canterbury Trotting Owners’ and Breeders’ Association.

The New Brighton Cup candidate, Zenith, recorded a pleasing trial with a win in the first heat; Peebles, Samantha, Adios Heather, Orient Night and Sentimental all went well enough to suggest early wins. Zenith took the lead at the end of two furlongs in the first heat and she set a sound pace. When asked for an effort in the straight by T. Gibbons, she responded well and won by a length from Robert Dillon, which made ground from a handy position.

Zenith has at times shown outstanding form over all distances. She could easily win in her next few starts.

Robert Dillon gave a smooth display from No. 1 at the barrier. He began safely and was handily placed throughout. He was third to the straight and finished solidly. He has been entered for the President’s Handicap at the Canterbury Park meeting on Saturday week. Queen Ngaio was not knocked about to finish a length behind Robert Dillon, with a length to Lavengro, which was the early leader. Jay Ar did well to finish fifth after breaking at the start and racing six wide approaching the straight. Jay Ar looks stronger now than earlier in the season and he should soon win again. Sextant raced in the middle of the field all the way and was a useful sixth, clear of Direct Rhythm, which showed little dash after pulling hard early. Waitaki Child stopped badly and finished last. Zenith paced the 13 furlongs in 3min 31 2-ssec. the last half-mile in Imjn 1 3-ssec. and the last quarter in 30 2-ssec. Easy Pace The pace was slack early in the second heat. Super Attack, which is now a member of O. M. Quinlan’s team, was first out, but at the end of two and a half furlongs

Meadow Scott pulled his way to the front.

Meadow Scott was hotly challenged by Adios Heather in the straight, but when the last named was steadied near the post, Meadow Scott raced clear and won by a length. Meadow Scott was disappointing at Washdyke at his most recent start, but he should soon make amends. Medow Scott paced the 13 furlongs in 3min 35 4-ssec. the last half-mile in Imin 1 I-ssec, and the last quarter in 30 4-ssec.

Adios Heather also gave a pleasing display when she finished second, a length and a half in front of Peebles, which looked to have something in reserve at the finish Peebles has not raced since December 31 when he failed at Addington. He looks to have freshened up well and might not be long showing worthwhile form.

Samantha, after tangling for a few strides at the start, came home solidly for fourth. She claims several engagements in the next few weeks and she should soon add to her fine record for consistency.

Sentimental began safely from the outside, but he lost a few lengths. He came home solidly for fifth and should soon extend his record. He has great speed and plenty of stamina, but unfortunately he is not too reliable at the start of his races.

Corrie Glen, a member of W. R. Butt’s team, lost ground early and finished fairly well for sixth, ahead of Super Attack and Pretoria Bob. The last-named lost ground at the start and moved up wide out in the middle stages only to tire again. Two-Year-Olds Aiblins, a slow beginner, won the first heat of the two-year-old parade in a keen finish with Who’s That and Bold John. Aiblins improved from towards the rear near the half-mile. Aiblins is a gelding by Stormyway from the New Zealand Oaks winner, Bonnie Castle. He shows promise and could be a worthwhile winner with more experience.

Who’s That (Meadow Chief —Quite Evident) finished fairly well for second a head behind the winner, with a head to Bold John (Thunder On—Bonny Joan). Dieman Lad (Van Dieman —Princess Dillonia) was a useful fourth, ahead of a filly by Thunder On from Stray Leaves in J. G. Croft’s team.

Aiblins paced the 10 furlongs in 2min 51sec, the last half-mile in Imin 4 4-ssec and the last quarter in 31 3-ssec.

Wee Mike was close to the lead throughout the second heat and he raced past the pacemaker. Stormy Prince (Stormway—Cherry Queen), inside the furlong and beat ’him easily by two lengths after • taking 2min 50 4-ssec for the 10 furlongs, the last half-mile in Imin 2 3-ssec. and the last quarter in 301-ssec. Wee Mike is a likely type of gelding by Van Dieman from Malabella. Douglas < Captain Adios— Lauder Hall) was three lengths back third, clear of Sara Black (Johnny GlobeGirl Black), with Why Not and Marino Maid following. Byebye Bill (Captain Adios —Forever) raced away over the final furlong of the third heat to gain an easy win over Johnny Warrior (Johnny Globe—Warform) after taking 2min 50 4-ssec for the 10 furlongs, the last half-mile in the slow time of lm ; ri 8 3-ssec.

Bon Chance was a fair third, ahead of Early Star and Asian Queen.

Splendid Win

Orient Night showed that she was in great order for her immediate engagements with a stylish win in the 3min 45sec class pace, in which she started from 36 yards. Orient Night made a splendid beginning and she improved quickly soon after the start to take the lead at the end of three and a half furlongs. Orient Nigh, was steadied in behind Sanfarer ait the

seven, furlongs, but she was clear again with two and a half furlongs left. Once into the straight she raced away from her opponents and won unchallenged by five lengths in the smart time of 3min 28 l-ssec for the 13 furlongs. The leaders took 60sec for their last half-mile. Orient Night sprinting her final quarter in 29sec. R. G. Morris has Orient Night close to her peak and she looks a much-improved mare. She should win several races before the season ends.

Scottish Light, which also started from 36 yards, came with a determined run over the final three furlongs for second. He looked to have something in reserve at the finish.

Lileas did best of the front-markers to finish third a neck back, with half a length to Spangled Princess, which was running on solidly. Lady Fair, Cheam. Whipdale and Sanfarer headed the others. Silvester Wins Silvester was close to the lead throughout the 3min 52sec class pace and he finished solidly to beat his stablemate. Sarona, by three lengths after taking 3min 35 4-ssec for the 13 furlongs, the last half-mile in Imin 2 3-ssec, and the last quarter in 30 2-ssec. Trade Talk, after breaking at the start, made up ground for third, ahead of Young Peg, which tired after pacemaking, Cornish Lad and Doctor Kyle. John Scott broke at the start of the 3min 56sec class trot, but he finished boldly to win by a length and a half from Fallacy Bay, with a similar distance back to a likely improver in Kuyaway, which showed speed after an early break. John Seott took 3min 43 l-ssec for the 13 furlongs, the last half-mile in Imin 3 4-ssec. John Scott is to race next in the Canterbury Park Trotting Stakes on Saturday week. Light Regiment, Highland River, which broke in the straight, and Our Own were next. Our Own, which started from 60 yards, was hampered by breaking horses in the first furlong, trotted a sound race. She should soon show further winning form.

Runfree outfinished Meadow Gay in the first heat of the 3min 56sec class pace, winning well by a neck in the slow time of 3min 42sec for the 13 furlongs, the last half-mile in Imin 3sec, and the last quarter in 30sec. Our Kay and Lady Croughton were next.

Simmonds came with a strong run in the straight to beat the pacemaker. Countess Hanover, by a head in the second heat, taking 3min 37sec for the 13 furlongs, the last half-mile in Imin 2 l-ssec, and the last quarter in 30sec. Anahera was a fair third in the third heat, clear of Our George and Lyn Scott.
