MINOR FIRES

Apart from about 20 gallons of oil being burned, little damage was done in the four reported fires that occurred in little more than an hour in various parts of Christchurch yesterday. The first ,at 4.20 p.m., was an oven fire at the home of Mr O. R. Morrall, 2 Quarry road. Mount Pleasant. It was answered by a unit from Woolston. There was no damage. At 4.40 p.m., a unit from Sydenham went to a truck on fire in Dyers Pass road. The vehicle, owned by T. E Elliott and Company, Ltd., cartage contractors of Islington was not much damaged. Burning oil on the roadside in Eureka street, Aranui, about 5.31 p.m., was attended by units from Woolston and the central fire station. The oil was from a 44gallon drum, the property of the Isaac Construction Company, Ltd., which had been tipped over and set on fire by persons unknown. About 28 gallons of oil was burned.
