Post Office Pens
Ball-point pens tn the Christchurch Post Office would in future be tied to the desks, said a Post Office spokesman yesterday. He said that originally the pens had been put out untied because it was thought to be a more convenient arrangement for customers. H' wever. as losses had been greater than expected and it was inconvenient for persons to find no pen on the desk they would be secured to the desk. Expenditure on Roads Reading expenditure in New Zealand during the year ended March 31, 1960, totalled £31.78m, a member of the National Roads Board (Mr N. A. Rattray) told the annual meeting of the No. 15 District Roads Council at Timaru on Thursday. Details are:— Motorways (31 miles) £ 1.60 m, State highways '7200 miles) £lom, countv roading (44.207 miles) £ 13.02 m, and municipal streets (4867 miles) £7.16m. The board’s revenue was £21.67m made up as follows:—Petrol tax. £ 15.25 m; milage tax, £.39m: motor vehicle registration, £2.31m; heavy traffic licence fees, £2.49m; tyre tax (customs tax), £.o3m. The contribution by the Government from the Consolidated Fund was £ 1.20m.—F.0.0.R.
