HIGH SCHOOL CADETS
“Little Military
Value”
The value of military training in high schools was considered by the Board of Governors of Cashmere High School at the board’s meeting last evening. Members who spoke agreed the training had “little military value.”
The board decided to defer the matter to the June meeting of the new board The headmaster <Mr T. H. McCombs) who is now on leave will be present then. The Rev A A Brash said he was attracted by the system of making the training optional and outside school hours.
“It seems it is a problem to get enough staff to cope with girl students while the boys are doing the training.” he said.
“I doubt whether its actual value is sufficient to off-set its nuisance,” said the chairman (Dr. A. Crowther). “As far as I can see it serves no useful military purpose now ” The acting headmaster (Mr E. Fancy) said he thought the military value of the training was "nil.”
"Its only possible use is that it may provide training in leadership.” he said. Mr R R Beauchamp said the only use he could see for the training was to teach boys "marching. keeping their backs straight, and so on.” He agreed it had no military value.
