Jury’s Award To Youth
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCLKAND. March 8. A jury in the Supreme Court at Auckland today awarded Graham Edward Crawford, aged 20. a storeman. of One Tree Hill, £7083 Os 6d general and special damages for injuries he suffered in a motor accident in May. 1957. Judgment for the plaintiff was entered by Mr Justice Boys. Crawford, who through his mother sought £21,273 damages against W. J. Parlour. Ltd., electrical engineers, of Auckland. was awarded £5900 general damages and £llB3 0s 6d special damages. The jury found that Bruce James Maiden, a former employee of the defendant company, was negligent in failing to stop the car he was driving at the intersection of Tawa and Rawhiti roads. One Tree Hill—a compulsory stop. It also found that Maiden failed to keep a proper look-out and that he failed to steer clear to avoid an accident. The jury found that there was no negligence by Crawford and that his illness of May. 1958. was caused by the accident. Mr P. G. Hillyer and Mr B. F. K. Prebble represented the plaintiff. Mr G. S. R. Meredith and Mr M. E. Casey appeared for the defendant company. The action arose out of a collision between a motorcycle ridden by the plaintiff and a car driven by Maiden. It was alleged that since the accident Crawford had suffered severe personality changes, and had had to spend some time in the Auckland Psychiatric Hospital.
