BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL BEATS WAITAKI

New Zealand's lowest test score of 26 was passed by Waitaki Boys’ High School in its second innings against Christchurch Boys’ High School yesterday—but only just. In 94 minutes of inept batting Waitaki was dismissed for 29 runs after being set 200 to win in even time. Boys' High School’s overwhelming win by 170 runs testified to the team’s undoubted superiority, but on an easy-paced wicket there was little excuse for the monotonously regular arrival and departure of the Waitaki batsmen who had little or no ability against spin bowling. Only 11 runs were added to Waitaki’s overnight score of 55 I for eight in its first innings before the last wicket fell. J. Restall stuck doggedly to his duty for 92 minutes for an undefeated 19. and he was the only one with any solidity at all. Although it was a rather tiring innings to watch, there was something to commend in the way he kept his head down and concentrated while his team-mates stayed a few fleeting moments and left. Openers Troubled The Boys* High School opening batsmen had many anxious moments against M. Wallace and R. Mason, and in one over Clements was hit on the pads with nearly every ball from Mason. Wallace bowled impressively but once again luck was not with him and he finished an economical spell with no wickets for 12 off eight overs. Yesterday he kept the ball at a more consistent length and had the opposition playing hurried shots frequently. Clements made 52 not out and his innings was a mixture of good batting and good fortune. He was dropped twice, once at slip and once at midoff. and a number of his shots landed luckily into gaps in the outfield. After he had survived the two chances he began to settle down and scored runs at a good rate with hard attacking shots. Crawford. the other opener, was much more subdued and took more than an hour to make 19. R. Mitchell did not spin the ball as much as he did on the first day and was. as a result, not as formidable. D. Forbes, who bowled for the first time in the match, delivered some highly-tempting leg breaks outside the leg stump, one of which eliminated the hard-hit-ting C. Stevens when he was caught on the boundary. The Waitaki fielding was not up to the high standard set the previous dav and this was one of the factors which let Boys’ High School score at a much faster rate than it did in its first innings Declaration Abodt 15 minutes after lunch. Boys' High School declared and left Waitaki 20(1 runs to score in about 200 minutes. Both openers began confidently enough. G. Wain resisted the temptation to flick at balls outside the off stump, and W. J. Kitson looking every inch the accomplished batsman. In much the same way as he did in the first innings Kitson skied a ball and was caught. Playing forward. Wain was caught at mid-on and after 40 minutes the third wicket fell with the score at nine when B. Bedford was bowled round his legs by Hopkins. Restall and Mitchell stayed together for a little while, but it was not long before the fifth wicket was lost with the total at 16. Stevens and Clements continued on their path of destruction with Stevens obtaining tremendous turn with his Chinamans. In no time the Waitaki rout was complete. Clements at one stage had dismissed two batsmen with two and the incoming plaver. D. Forbes, survived a confident lbw appeal to prevent Clemen’s from getting a hat-trick. The bowling of Clements and Stevens was steadv for most of the game and Stevens, esoeciallv turned the ball alarmingly. But this was no excuse for the opoosition. which batting on a slow wicket, shuffled its wav unce*»ainlv to a c-ushing defea* The Bovs’ H’>h fielding was keen and efficient T Haydon, the wicket-keeper, wm

outstanding. His two stumpings; were made at lightning speed, and his one-handed run out of C. Johnson from a slightly wide throw was a fine piece of work.
