RURAL SCHOOL PROBLEMS
“Country Service” Supported
The Ashburton High School Board of Governors yesterday asked the Education Commission that such schools in country centres should retain the benefits of “the country service clause” in staff recruitment. Witnesses described the difficulties of attracting staff and said one position had been advertised every month for a year without a single application being received. For some years applications for positions numbered two. one, or none. During the last four years 12 of the teachers appointed had applied so that they could complete "country service." The Ashburton board also suggested separation of postprimary school transport from Education Board control. It described the difficulties of post-primary pupils obliged to fit in with primary school bus timetables and the way in which primary school transport needs tended to over-ride the needs ot older children.
