TOWN-PLANNING APPEALS
Objections To Zoning
Two appeals against zoning decisions by the City Council were heard by the Town and Country Planning Appeal Board yesterday. Decision was reserved in both cases.
Cashmere Properties (Mr B. A. Barrer) appealed against the zoning of a property at 254 Hereford street as residential. Mr Barrer submitted that the area was already predominantly commercial and the noise from the Christchurch Milk Company, which adjoined the property, was a nuisance to the tenants in the building. The City Council (Mr W. R. ’ Lascelles) opposed the appeal on the grounds that the zoning was part of the City Council’s plan to stop the encroachment of commerce into the area.
The Canterbury Stone Company (Mr H. M. S. Dawson) appealed against the zoning of its property at 169 Durham street as industrial B and asked for a rezoning to industrial C or the recognition of the company having a conditional use of the premises.
Mr Lascelles said there was recognition of the present use by the company but the principle that the City Council should have control of future expansion by the firm should be sustained by the appeal board.
