Town Hall Site
Sir, —Your nice little editorial note at the end of my letter on this subject pointing out that Cr. Smith is against the use of any of the city's open spaces, does not cut much ice as the town hall -would not occupy all the square, and space under the trees would still be left for people to sit. Surely Cr. Smith, as chairman of the finance committee, should be interested in getting a readymade site for nothing and saving the ratepayers £160,000. It would be interesting if you would publish a plan of the proposed town hall with dimensions showing tow much land would be used. The south side of the square would still be left as an open space.— Yours, etc., S. W. HICKMOTT. March 8. 1961.
[Sound town planning provides for adequate parks and “breathing spaces” in urban areas. As the eastern central part of the city is none too well provided for in this respect, there would be no saving in using Latimer square, or a part of it, for a town hall; an equivalent amount of land close by would have to be acquired for a park or reserve, as Cr. Smith has implied.—Ed., “The Press.”]
