Sir, —Mr Maudling, Economic Secretary to the Treasury, reported to the House of Commons that, taßing the internal purchasing power of the pound as 20s in 1914, he quoted a series of relevant dates that brought the value down to 5s 6d in 1954. That was not out! Our fantastic prosperity has thus been at the expense of the monetary unit It might have been fun up till now. but the hang-over is getting worse. In my kid days there was a saying. “Cheats never prosper!”—Yours, etc., THIS WE DID. March 7, 1981.
