CONTEST FOR INVENTORS
Former City Man Wins Heat
A former Christchurch man, Mr M. V. Blake, who served as a wing commander in the Royal Air Force and took part m the Battle of Britain, has won the third'heat in a £7500 “Get Ahead” contest conducted by the "Daily Mail” and the British Broadcasting Corporation. Mr Blake, who was born in New Zealand 47 years ago and who was well-known among Canterbury athletes as a former pole vault champion, now lives at Virginia Water, Surrey. He was awarded his place by gaining the highest marks for a precision weighing machine.
Mr Blake was described as “an inventor of great ingenuity” by the three judges, factory manager, Mr Blake will now go forward to meet the winner of another heat next week. If he wins again he will have a place in an< * a chance to get £7500 to develop his invention.
In 1936, Mr Blake left for England to join the Royal Air Force under a New Zealand Government scholarship which he gained as a graduate from Canterbury University College. When war broke out the Air Ministry accepted two of his invention*.
