PICKETS IN CEYLON
Batons Used By Police (N.Z -Put .-Reuter—CopvrtffM ) COLOMBO. March 2. Five persons were taken to hospital after police used batons on Federal Party pickets protesting against language changes outside the provincial secretariat in Kalina, in the northern peninsula of Ceylon today. First reports said Ceylonese sailors slso charged the pickets with their rifle butts. In addition to those taken to hospital 12 persons, including the Federal Party leader. Dr. E. M. V. Naganatban, received minor injuries. The pickets, protesting against the introduction of Sinhalese as the official language, have brought administration to a standstill in the northern and eastern Tamilspeaking provinces. Carried Into Offices Police went into action after Federal Party members tried to prevent the government agent for the North Central Province, Mr Nissanka Wijeyeratne, from entering the secretariat. He was later carried into the offices by police. Sailors then cordoned the area round the secretariat They barred the way to a large crowd who marched through the town, shouting slogans.
