Competition Winner

Prizewinners in th* national ■ industrial design competing in wallpaper, which was organised for the Festival oCjßellington by the festival arts committee were annotated yesterday. M UO guineas and second aria* of 75 guineas were awardedto Mr W. / Mason. Third prize of 80 »**•» went to Mr M. Qfrvyey. Hamilton, and merit prifljh.of 25 guineas were au ftded to Messrs G. X. Fai burn. Hamilton. D. J. Hjmut 'If 1 ' lington, J. Fuller. fret Idin ,‘Mra G Malone, Morrinsvili and Miss K. A. Clark, Wellington. The major prizewinner, Mr Mason, is an art teacher at Wellington Girla’ Colleg l He served with the New Z aland Navy in the Second World War and then went to I andon to study art at the Central School. There h* specialised ih textile design. partidilarly in relation to screen printing. Sponsored by Ashley Wallpapers, Ltd, the competition was aimed at ptwiding encouragement for New Zealand artists and to inttoduce to New Zealand wallpaptr* of distinctive style suitabe for modern homes. The general manager tf the sponsoring company (In N. V. Forbes) said he felt sure that some of the wisning designs would appeal to the New Zealand market The judges, Mrs E. Page. Dr J. C. Beaglehole anc Mr E. Hurdley, based their decisions on the suitability of designs for wallpapers nproduction, artistic merit and originality of approach. A sample of wallpaper prepared from the winning design, as well as other entries in the competition, will be exhibited during the festival.
