FOOT-MOUTH DISEASE
New Vaccine In Britain
LONDON, February 20
British scientists have developed a new vaccine giving protection against foot-and-mouth disease, according to the “Dailjr Express." Government plans to make it available to the world would be announced shortly, said the newspaper.
The new vaccine was developed after four years’ research at the Pirbright Institute in Surrey. It was cheaper and more effective than any other and had been developed to a<. stage at which it could be produced commercially The Pirbright vaccine differed from others used in Europe and South America in that ft was made from a live virus
It was made from an "attentuated” strain in a manner similar to that used in producing anti-polio vaccine. The virulence of the virus was reduced by passing it through many generations of other creatures.
Smaller doses of the vaccine were required for treatment and it was believed to give longer immunity than other vaccines
Vaccines had been prepared against each of the seven varieties of the disease known in different parts of the world They had been tested on thousands of cattle in Britain and Africa in the last two years.
Scientists at Pirbright were now anxious to make the results of their work generally available especially in underdeveloped countries such as Africa.
