Australia And C’wealth Plan
CANBERRA, Feb. 20. Australia would contribute about £A200.000 a year in special aid to underdeveloped African countries of the Commonwealth the Prime Minister (Mr Menzies) said today He was announcing Australia’s co-operation in a scheme suggested at the British Commonwealth Prime Ministers’ conference in London last year. The scheme was to be kiown as S.C.A.P. (Special Commonwealth Assistance Plan), he said. Mr Menzies said the EA200.000 would be in addition to Australian expenditure under the Colombo Plan and other international aid programmes. Australia would contribute to the new plan by providing bilateral technical assistance —training, exports and equipment
Mr Menzies said Australia’s share of the assessed cost of the United Nations Congo force in 1960 was £A386.000 and assessed cost this year would be £A766,000.
