TAYLOR’S MISTAKE

Sanitation Discussed

Sanitation at Taylor’s Mistake was discussed by a subcommittee of the City Council last evening with two representatives of the Taylor’s Mistake Residents’ Association who are also members of the surf life-saving club there. The council recently considered a report from its Chief City Inspector (Mr A. P. Millthorpe), with opinions from the Health Department and the Drainage Board, showing that sanitation was not satisfactory at the beach resort, where most of the baches are on a “paper road.” It was proposed that an order should be made for the removal of the baches, but the council decided to postpone a decision for discussions with residents to see if the position could be improved. “The Taylor’s Mistake people are aware of the dangers of not having proper sanitary conditions and are anxous to co-operate,” said Cr. H. P. Smith, chairman of the council’s by-laws committee, after the discussions last evening. Various suggestions had been made and would be investigated by Mr Millthorpe.

The main recommendation from the residents was that it should be made compulsory for everyone to use a chemical lavatory, because disposal of effluent would present a lesser problem than raw sewage.

“It was agreed that this was not a solution to the problems, but it is an amelioration of conditions, and it is pleasing to find that the residents appreciate that the council has a responsibility,” Cr. Smith said. There would be further discussions in about a fortnight, he added.
