DEMOLITION OF BUILDING
Work Done In One Day
A gang of 17 men, assisted by two bulldozers, seven pneumatic concrete breakers and a fleet of about 10 trucks, demolished the single storey brick and concrete building at 168 Manchester street on Saturday. The building was formerly occupied by the North British and Mercantile Insurance Company, Ltd. Work began at 5.30 am. and was completed by 5.45 pm. It was carried out by Ryan Bros., earthmoving roading and demolition contractors.
Scaffolding was erected across the front of the building. The most difficult task was the demolition of heavy reinforced concrete parapet which was about 6ft deep and 12 to 14 inches thick and rose to a height of 28ft above street level. This was cut up into narrow sections and then pushed back into the building.
About 2.30 p.m. the fleet of trucks began carting away the rubble. Heavy planking was laid across the footpath to prevent damage to the surface but because of the soft nature of the ground there was some damage to the sealing. This will be repaired today. “The job was completed without a hitch,” said Mr B. Ryan. "The job was done on a Saturday so as to cause a minimum of inconvenience to the public.”
