LETTER FROM PRESIDENT

Schoolboy Gets Surprise

A personally signed letter from President Kennedy has been unexpectedly received by a young Christchurch schoolboy, Francis Twiss, of the Elmwood Norman School, who last year wrote to the President during a class let-ter-writing period. His teacher suggested that the children write for practice to any persons who “weren’t too busy.” Francis, aged 9. asked if he could write to Mr Kennedy, even though he was “probably pretty busy" after winning the election.

Explaining to the President that New Zealand had also just held an election, Francis said he was "very happy” that Mr Kennedy had won and would be going to the White House.

And although he was pretty busy, the President did manage to reply. His letter dated December 27. read as follows: “Dear Mr Twiss. I want to thank you for the very friendly message you sent to me after my election to the Presidency I am most heartened by the many expressions of goodwill which I have received from abroad. I am sure that they reflect a broad unity of purpose throughout the world community. I hope that my record during the next four years will sustain your confidence. “With all good wishes. I am. sincerely, John F. Kennedy."
