MACDOUGAL AGAIN
Earnings Now £40,000 (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, February 12. New Zealand-bred horses took all the major placings in the Henry Lawson Handicap, won by the 1959 Melbourne Cup winner, Macdougal, at Randwick yesterday. Carrying 9-10. Macdougal put up a true stayer’s petformance to win the 10-furlong event by a length from the odds-on favourite Yarrawin, with Treasured Link (Nonda in New Zealand) three-quarters of a length further away third.
Macdougal will now tackle the longest event of his career—the Australian Cup (two miles and one furlong and a half) at Flemington on March 13. Neville Sellwood, who rode Macdougal yesterday, will make the trip to Melbourne for the Australian Cup.
With the Melbourne Cup and Metropolitan to his credit, Macdougal has few peers in recent years in stamina. An aged gelding by Marco Polo 11, Macdougal now has topped £40,000 in stakes.
Yarrawin, a brother of Monte Carlo, opened at even money but big betters rushed to take the short price. Ater that Yarrawin was always at odds-on.
