A Jordanian soldier has been killed in a border clash with Israeli troops, an Israeli Army spokesman said today. There were no Israeli casualties.

According to the spokesman an Israeli patrol encountered two Jordanian soldiers on Israeli territory, north-east of Eyal village in the Plain of Sharon.

The Jordanians ignored a challenge to halt and at the same time a Jordanian post across the border fired on the Israeli patrol. During the exchange of fire one of the two Jordanian soldiers was shot dead.
