LIBRARY BOOKS

Shorter Loan Period

Next week many persons holding books on loan from the Canterbury Public Library may be surprised to receive overdue notices asking for t’’e books to be returned. The reason behind this, explained the city librarian (Mr R. N. O’Reilly) yesterday, was that until recently the minirum loan period of four weeks, plus the odd days to the following Monday, had been reduced to a minimum of two weeks and the odd days. “The longer period was originally brought in two years ago as an experiment to try to reduce the amount of work by library staff tn notifying overdue borrowers. In fact it did reduce our work, but as time went on borrowers’ habits changed and they are not returning books as fast as they used to,” said Mr O’Reilly. “As a result the selection available on the library shelves has been somewhat meagre, although more books have been acquired than ever before."

Mr O’Reilly said it was expected that the reduction in the borrower's loan period would result in a speedier turn-round of books and a greater selection available on the library’s shelves.
