DURHAM ST. CROSSING

Council Closure Advertised

Its intention to close the Durham street railway crossing is being advertised by the City Council The closure is at the request of the Railways Department, which wishes to complete its realignment of the western rail approaches to the new station The part of the street to be closed is from the northern boundary of the railway reserve down to the Cass street intersection. The part of the street next to Moorhouse avenue will remain as a cul-de-sac. \

Objections must be lodged with the council in writing on or before March 28. If objections are made, the council must inquire into them, and if it reaffirms its decision to close the street the matter must be referred to the Magistrate’s Court. The Railways Department asked for the closure at the time the Colombo street overbridge and new railway station were being considered The council offered to close the Durham street crossing provided the department met one-quarter of the cost of the bridge, and the proposal was accepted After the bridge was opened, the department approached the council to close the crossing, and the council agreed to complete its parts of the bargain; but after protests that the council review the situation with the department and the National Roads Board, It then reaffirmed its decision. While there may be objections to the closing, the council does not expect opposition to another proposed street closing. This is an unformed piece of road off Hay street, Linwood, where a block originally proposed to be developed from the street has been roaded from the rear. The council intends to divide the road-line into a building section and a right-of-way for neighbouring properties.
