LANDING ON ONE WHEEL
Light Plane Damaged (N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Feb. 9. A young Feilding pilot, Mr Michael Feeney, made a onewheeled landing with a Cessna topdressing aircraft at the New Plymouth airport early this afternoon. Mr Feeney, a pilot for Rural Aviation. Ltd, was topdressing on Mr J. J. Hurley’s farm at Patea when one of the undercarriage wheels snapped off as the plane took off. Because of the danger of attempting to land on Mr Hurley’s small airstrip, Mr Feeney flew the aircraft to New Plymouth. Crash trucks raced into position at the airport, and other topdressing aircraft were cleared away. As a group of about 50 persons waited tensely the aircraft glided along the runway and then slewed to a stop as the stub of the landing wheel leg ploughed a furrow 15 yards long. The aircraft then fell on its nose, crumpling one wing tip and bending the propeller. Mr Feeney was unhurt.
