Christchurch SubSurface

Sir, —The article by P. J. Alley indicates the varied nature in the past build-up of this district. Logs struck by well-borings and pile-driv-ings* may derive from an ancient forest, and may also have been carried down by water. In excavations for a sewer syphon under the Heathcote river a few years ago a solid log was encountered about 12ft down. It had to be chopped through. I submitted a piece to the Forestry Service for an opinion. It was identified as pink pine (evidently a long time submerged), a high-country species. This log must have been carried down by a much bigger river flow than the present Heathcote. Other sewer excavations struck logs and driftwood, suggesting that the Bowenvale flat was once a flood water lagoon.—Yours etc., A. H. SHRUBSHALL. January 22, 1961.
