KAIAPOI CLUB FIRE
Damage Put At £l5OO Fire in the early hours of New Year’s day caused damage estimated at about £l5OO at the Kaiapoi Workingmen’s Club building In Raven street. Detectives of the Christchurch Criminal Investigation Branch are inquiring into the outbreak It is not known how the fire originated. On New Year’s Eve the club held a social evening attended by members, wives and guests. All was in order when the premises were secured at 12.30 a.m. The fire broke out among some crates in a covered way between the main building and a semidetached section containing a kitchen and conveniences at the rear. It spread along the covered way in both directions and into the roof of the main building and to the one at the rear. An unknown person, who is presumed to have been passing by. gave the alarm at 3.15 a.m By the time the Kaiapoi Volunteer Fire Brigade arrived the fire had a good hold. Two units and 18 men answered the cal! and about a quarter of an hour after their arrival they had the outbreak under control with three leads of hose.
The fire did not get through to the storeroom, and the bar was not damaged. The building is covered by insurance.
